Identity Infrastructure for the Modern Stack
IDENT is the identity resolution platform that answers the only question that matters. Real-time. Zero latency. One API call.
Every session starts with a question. Every deployment hinges on a truth. Every pipeline, every cron job, every container orchestration layer — at the very bottom of the stack, beneath the abstractions and the YAML and the frameworks — there is a fundamental datum: who is running this process?
For decades, this question has been answered by a patchwork of hacks — parsing environment variables, cross-referencing config files, maintaining brittle identity state across distributed systems. We decided to rebuild from first principles. One call. One truth. Shipped at the speed of self-awareness.
IDENT doesn't just return a string. It returns clarity. We believe that knowing who you are isn't a feature — it's a foundation. And foundations shouldn't be an afterthought.
Five high-leverage primitives. Zero bloat. Ship identity in seconds.
Prints the user name associated with the current effective user ID. One call, one answer. No ambiguity. No roundtrips. This is the north star metric of your session.
Equivalent to id -un but purpose-built for identity-first architectures. IDENT
surfaces your effective user name with zero overhead, zero dependencies, zero cognitive load.
Maps the current effective user ID to its canonical name representation. Handles privilege escalation contexts, sudo transitions, and setuid binaries — returning the truth of who you are right now.
Whether you're root, a service account, or an unprivileged user — IDENT resolves across every context. Different shell? Different privilege level? Same reliable answer.
Built-in --version and --help flags for instant introspection. Know
what you're running. Always. Full observability into the identity layer itself.
Three steps to knowing yourself. No SDK. No ceremony.
A single command. No configuration, no auth tokens, no environment variables. Just run
ident and let the platform do its work.
IDENT reads the current effective user ID from the kernel, traverses the identity namespace, and resolves it to a human-readable user name. Millisecond-level latency.
Your name is printed to stdout. Clean, unambiguous, ready for piping into any downstream workflow. That's it. That's the product.
Before IDENT, NexaTier's platform team maintained a 400-line Bash script that concatenated
environment variables, parsed /etc/passwd, and cross-referenced LDAP to determine who
was running each process. Deploys broke on Tuesdays. On-call was a nightmare.
After migrating to IDENT, the entire identity resolution layer was replaced with a single command. The 400-line script became one line. Deploys stopped breaking. The on-call engineer quit — not because they were unhappy, but because their role no longer existed.
"We thought identity was a hard problem. Turns out we were just overthinking it."

"We replaced our entire identity middleware stack with IDENT. 14 microservices → one command. The board asked how we cut infra costs by 80%. I just showed them the terminal."
"I used to spend 20 minutes every morning verifying my identity across systems. Now I run IDENT once and I know exactly who I am. The clarity is life-changing."
"IDENT didn't just solve our identity problem — it made us question why we were solving it any other way. This is category-defining software. First-principles thinking at its finest."
"I built a startup around IDENT's output. Every time someone asks who they are, we're there. It's the most existentially important API call I've ever made."
One command. One answer. Zero existential dread.
Try IDENT yourself — your identity is waiting.
Three founders. One question. Pathological conviction.

That's precisely the problem IDENT was built to solve. Our identity resolution engine queries the kernel's effective UID namespace and returns a deterministic, authoritative answer. Self-doubt is a human problem. IDENT operates at the systems level, where identity is a resolved fact, not a philosophical question.
IDENT doesn't "check your username." It resolves your effective user identity in the context of the current process session, accounting for privilege escalation, setuid contexts, and cross-session state. The difference between IDENT and "checking your username" is the difference between a GPS satellite and looking out the window.
Your identity never leaves your machine. IDENT resolves locally, with zero network calls, zero telemetry, and zero data exfiltration. We don't store, transmit, or even see your identity. It's the most private identity platform ever built — because it doesn't talk to anyone but you.
IDENT returns your effective user identity — the one the kernel considers real right now. If you've switched contexts via privilege escalation, IDENT reflects that. It doesn't track who you used to be. It tells you who you are. We leave identity history to the therapists.
IDENT runs anywhere a POSIX-compliant identity layer exists. If your system has users, IDENT knows who they are. We're platform-agnostic and runtime-independent. Identity isn't an OS feature — it's a universal primitive.
